In this Blog I am going to give you a guide of Glasgow as a disabled person. As I live in Glasgow and I go out and about a lot in the city, I would like to share my experiences of going out and about in Glasgow.
Shopping - I love going shopping, there are a quite few shopping centres around in Glasgow and I must say they all are quite accessible for disabled people. The main centres which I go to are Clydebank, Braehead, St Enoch centre, Buchanan Galleries and Silverburn. The shops that I like to go in to are Primark, New Look, H&M, HollIster and many more. All of these shops have good disabled access because they are quite big to move around in and I can see everything. I find the shop assistants very helpful like if somewhere is too tight for my wheelchair to go through they will move things to get me through. I love Primark, not just because I love their pyjamas, it is because they have a checkout just for wheelchair users, so you don't need to wait in a long line. So, shopping in Glasgow for disabled people is good.
Restaurants and Pubs - I like to go out for dinner and drinks once in a while. I go to the Three Craws a lot because it is nearby, and it is very big. The staff are all nice and helpful. when I go out drinking, I like to go to Byers Road in the West End. There are special pubs there and that have good disabled access like Curlers and Oran Mor. I like to go to Wetherspoons pubs too because I find all of them very big to move around in my wheelchair.
Cinemas - I like to go to the cinema. All of the cinemas in Glasgow have good disabled access, they have a few wheelchair spaces with a great view.
Concerts - as you may read in my music Blog that I love my concerts. My best concert venue tips are The Hydro, the Concert Hall and the Old Fruit Market in the Merchant City. All of them have very good disabled access and spaces which you have a great view of everything.
Museums - sometimes I like to go to a museum. The museums I like to go to are the Kelvingrove art gallery, the Riverside museum and the People's Palace and again these all are very accessible, and I can see everything in the museums.
As I said I like to go out and about in Glasgow but sometimes it can be hard to get a loo. As you may have seen in my Changing Places Blog, I can't use a standard disabled toilet and I need to use changing places toilet. There are just 16 of these changing places toilets in Glasgow, so when I am going out and about in Glasgow I really watch where I am going so I can get to a toilet. You find out where the Changing Places loos are on the Changing Places website.
Getting about around in Glasgow it is quite easy if you go by bus or taxi, but some train station and underground stations are not accessible – check before you travel!
So Glasgow is a good city for disabled access but there are some things that can be better like more changing places toilets – But we’re working on that!
