My Writing Background

I started writing when I was around 15 years old. It was when I received my third communication device, which gave me access to a computer for the first time (see my AAC Journey blog for more information).

One of the first blogs I wrote was about my life, my disability and my communication device. It was quite short, as I was new to writing, but I was very proud of it. At the time, I loved watching Blue Peter, so I sent my blog to the programme. To my delight, I received a Blue Peter badge for my writing.

I continued to do a lot of writing at school, particularly in English. However, I moved away from writing while I was at college. My interest in blogging returned when I started working at Cerebral Palsy Scotland, where I wrote blogs for the organisation. I really enjoyed sharing my experiences and developing my writing skills.

In January 2020, I lost my job and, a few months later, the country went into lockdown. During that time, I threw myself into blogging. I began writing blogs for TAG (The Advisory Group) during the first lockdown and have continued writing ever since. That experience inspired me to create this website as a place to showcase my work and share my stories.

Why Writing?

Writing is another way of communicating. As I have no speech, writing helps me to express myself and get my voice heard.

Many of my blogs are about my personal experiences, particularly my experiences of living with a disability. I also enjoy writing reviews of places I have visited and sharing my thoughts on different topics.

I believe everyone has a story to tell. By sharing our stories, we help others understand our experiences, raise awareness of important issues and encourage positive change. I write because I want people to understand my life, my experiences and the things that matter to me.
