Support Blog

In this Blog I am going to talk about my support. What I do, what I look in a support worker, why is it important to me and also about friendships between me and support workers.

I have been getting support for 12 years now since I left school. I have always got my support from Key Community Support in Glasgow West. Over the years I have used my support for a lot of different things.

When I started getting support, I used my support to go college and then I worked for a few years which my support workers supported to do. Then and now my support workers support me to go out like going to meet Westlife at clyde1 or to a cafe or shopping.

I can honestly say, I do get or got on with most of my support workers. What I look in a support worker is that they are very outgoing, fun, very understanding and it is really important to me if there is good communication between me and my workers. I don't pick my workers as such but if I have any problems with any of my workers, I am good to say if I am not happy.

Getting support is really important to me because it gives me a bit of my independence and gives my Mum a break too. Even although I have just 16 hours of support a week I would been lost without it. As I am 29 and even although I love being with my family, I love being with my support workers every week. I learnt this more during the lock downs when I didn't have support for months.

Some people say that people who get support and support workers shouldn't built up a friendship, but in my opinion, that is a lot of Rubbish! The way I see it is why shouldn't I, because they are supporting me with a lot of important things in my life and we do things like friends do, so we are like friends.   These days I use my support to go to a cafe to do my Blogs and even although I work on my Blogs, I still make time to have a chat with them because they are my friends. Now I have great friendships with support workers that I’ve had for years.

looking into the future, I hope to continue to get my support workers and wherever, my life takes me they will support me.
